NORTH KERRY LEAGUE. Asdee0-14 Knocknagoshel 0-10. By virtue of a
4pt winning margin our senior footballers qualified for the McCarthys
Insurance Brokers League, Division 2 semi final and a meeting with
Ballyduff with a date and venue to be confirmed. Two very much
under-strength sides took the field at Walsh Park, on Wednesday
evening last and after a most entertaining contest it was the home
side that came out on top.
Certainly this was a very much improved display by Asdee from some previous encounters and on this occasion powered by Darragh Keane scorer of 5 magnificent points; all from play, giving a truly Man of the Match performance at midfield along with Kieran Kelly putting the shackles on Knocks dangerman James
Walsh; however it must be said that the aforementioned player was
always a threat and got all but 2 of his sides tally with 4 of those
coming from frees. The game got underway with Knock quickly into their
stride and after Asdee were to kick 5 wides in succession it was Knock
who were first to get on the scoresheet with corner back Ritchie
Cotter firing over a fine point in the 6th minute. Further points
followed from James Walsh, (3) and Cillian O Connor before Asdee
opened their account through Paul O Carroll by the 13th minute.
Up to this it was the visitors who were in complete control with Mike
Brosnan dominant at full back and Padraig Reidy and Darragh O Connoll
doing likewise. An injury to Darragh O Connell, (midfield) who had to
go off before the break was a huge loss to Knock. Asdee weathered the
storm to force their way back in the game and a long range point from
Kieran Kelly led the revivial. James Walsh, (2) and Matthew O Hanlon
and Eoin Tydings exchanged points and after 22mts only a point
separated the sides in favour of Knock. In the final 7mts of the half
Asdee played some delightful football with Sean Keane, Noel Long and
John Doran in the thick of the action and points from Darragh Keane,
(2) and Eoin Kennedy with Knocks only reply from James Walsh leaving
the half time score; Asdee 0-8 Knock 0-7.
At the interval Eoin Kennedy was forced to retire with an injury and was replaced by his father John and even though the pace was long gone from the former All
Ireland Senior Medal holder he was quick to make his mark sending
over from 30meters after 10mts. Now Asdee were well on top in this
half with Eoin Tydings and Paul O Carroll in tremendous form and even
though they never lost the lead the Knock boys kept knocking on the
door but a number of wides didn’t help their cause either.
Michael Walsh, Dan Roache and David O Donoghue kept chasing and with Shane O
Connell guarding his net well; there was always the threat of a goal
at the other end. Still the home side were just keeping their noses in
front and Paul O Carroll, Matthew O Hanlon, Darragh Keane,(2) on
target; with James Walsh recording Knock final points.
Team and scorers; Asdee; Conor Coughlan, Brian Coughlan, Martin Collins, Dinny
Dalton, John Doran, Sean Keane, Noel Long, Kieran Kelly, 2pts, Darragh
Keane, 5pts, Mike Breen, Eoin Kennedy, 1pt, Paul O Carroll, 2pts,
Matthew O Hanlon, 2pts, Eoin Tydings, 1pt, Keith McNamara. Subs, John
