BERNARD O CALLAGHAN MEMORIAL CHAMPIONSHIP.

Asdee 1-6 Duagh 1-15

The McMunns Bar and Restaurant, Ballybunion Sponsored Bernard O Callaghan Memorial North Kerry Senior Football Championship Round 1 v Duagh took place on Saturday, October 12th at O Sullivan Park, Finuge.

Asdee bowed out of the first round of the North Kerry Championship against a Duagh team whose experience told as the second half wore on.

Asdee got a dream start when a turnover in their own fullback line resulted in an excellent flowing team move, ending with Cyril Dineen finishing a low shot to the corner of the net.

Duagh fought back immediately, showing the confidence from their promotion to Division 3 of the county league, with a couple of well-taken points, despite the best efforts of a dogged Asdee defence.

Owen Tydings finished a lovely move with a brilliant point from near the end line to level up proceedings. Paul O’Carroll & Darragh Keane then scored 2 well taken frees to keep the sides neck and neck.

Just before the break, Anthony Maher kicked a super point to give Duagh a one-point lead at the break on a score of 0-7 to 1-3.

The second half saw the introduction of the influential Kieran Quirke for Duagh, who kicked 2 points at crucial stages.

Duagh started the half brightly, kicking 3 points without reply. Asdee had their chances in this period but not taking them proved costly as Duagh moved into a 4-point lead.

Darragh Keane then kicked the point of the game, scoring from distance after a superb solo run. Duagh replied with 2 points to stretch their lead to 5. Keane was to kick a 45 and another free to keep Asdee in touch.

As Duagh moved 5 clear again, Asdee then tried to work a goal when points might have been the better option. Duagh quickly counter-attacked and were awarded a penalty for a foul just on the edge of the box. Martin Scannell put it away & gave Duagh an eight-point lead, which had not looked likely up to that point.

The final eight minutes petered out as Duagh’s strength in depth told, while Asdee tried to fashion a goal to no avail, with James Kelly also doing well to save another goal late on.

The final score was 1-15 to 1-6. Best of luck to Duagh in the next round. Hard luck to Asdee, who fought hard to a man in a physical game but will rue missed chances while the game was tight. The next game is the County League playoff v Beale in three weeks.
