Bernard O Callaghan Memorial Senior Football Championship in Association with McMunns Bar and Restaurant, Ballybunion for the Eamon O Donoghue Memorial Cup.
Ever since competition in North Kerry got underway in the mid 20s and with Craughdarrigs one and only Senior Championship success in 1934, (known as League at that particular time) captained by Jack Walsh; 6 time All Ireland senior winner with Kerry , local football followere have been attending all North Kerry Football games at all levels on a regular basis. However the North Kerry Senior Football Championship is very much the priority not alone for North Kerry but especially for Asdee as it is the home place of probably one of the finest forwards the game has known in the Country and on this Sunday at O Rahilly Park, Ballylongford; the Cup in his memory will be presented to the winning captain of either Brosna or St. Senans. Below is a little tribute to the man from Kilcolman, Asdee.
EAMON O DONOGHUE. Though it is now 36 years since his death; (March
7th 1983) the name of Eamon O Donoghue will always be remembered and
spoke about. No doubt he was one of the finest footballers that ever
graced any G A A field and his memory lives on because within a short
time after his death the Ballylongford and Castleisland Desmonds clubs
came together and presented a Cup to the North Kerry Football Board to
be known as the Eamon O Donoghue Memorial Cup and each year this cup
is presented to the captain of the club which wins the North Kerry
Senior Football Championship in which Eamon displayed his many talents
throughout the 60s and 70s.
His record of achievements speaks for itself having represented Kerry at all grades of football; 2 All Ireland Senior Football medals, 5 National League Medals, 1 Railway
Cup, 3 County Senior Football Championship medals, with Shannon Rangers, 1 Munster Senior
Club, Shannon Rangers, 3 All Ireland 7-a-side all with Shannon Rangers, Munster
Colleges with DeLa Salle, Waterford and U C D Dublin.. I suppose his playing days with
his Club Ballylongford will also linger on forever; rarely if ever did
he miss playing for his Club and on one occasion for the final of a
local tournament himself and his brother, Paudie, R I P drove to Glin, County Limerick after playing for Kerry Senior Footballers to help their club to
victory. At that particular time his club Ballylongford were probably
one of the top teams in North Kerry and beyond playing in 11 North
Kerry Senior Football Championships between 1965 to 1977 winning 5
titles, North Kerry Leagues, County Intermediate Championships and
much more. Certainly the man from Kilcolman, Asdee was always the
brightest star.
