COUNTY NOVICE SEMI FINAL
Asdee 1-5 Castlegregory 0-12
Played at O Sullivan Park, Finuge on Sunday last Castlegregory former All Ireland Junior Club champions and pre match favourites fully deserved their 4pt victory over an understrength Asdee side who in fairness were playing catch-up football for the bigger part of the game but showed great heart and spirit to keep in touch with the West Kerry men who kicked a total of 13 wides throughout the game.
Weather conditions were far from perfect with a strong wind blowing diagonally into the dressing room goals which made life difficult for both teams.
Castlegregory having that wind advantage in the opening half were struggling to find the target and it took until the 8th minute before Colm O Mahony opened the scoring for his side; for the next 3 minutes it was a point a minute with Michael Scanlon, Anto Kelleher and Colm O Mahony adding minors.
On the other hand Asdee were struggling to get the ball into their attack even though Eoin Kennedy who did make a few penetrating runs through the middle along with Darren Russell; however Timmy Moriarty and Gerald Fitzgerald were dealing with what ever came towards them.
In the 20th minute Asdee finally got on the scoreboard when Conor Keane was adjudged to be leg blocked and from the resultant penalty Darren Russell made no mistake. Castle were still calling the shots but were finding the Asdee defence in mean mood. Then deep into injury time Anto Kelleher added a Castle point to leave the half time score; Castlegregory 0-5 Asdee 1-0.
On the changeover Castle started as they finished the first half with former Kerry footballer Alan Fitzgerald back after a long lay off kicking a massive point from 40 meters out near the sideline but Asdee who now had the elements with them were quick to make a mark with Eoin Kennedy and Darragh Keane cut the deficit to a single point by the 5th minute.
Were we going to have a shock result; definately not Castle regrouped and it took a marvellous save from James Kelly in the Asdee goals to prevent a certain score after 9 minutes. Pat Donoghue just introduced for Castle and with his first touch split the uprights. Alan Fitzgerald from play and a free and centre back, Timmy Moriarty extended their sides lead out to 5 points by the 20th minute. Stephen Lynch fielded well for Asdee and kicked over as did Darragh Keane.
Even though Asdee were living on scraps for the 4th quarter they were still in the game with only a goal between the sides with 3 minutes left for play. Late points from Brandon Hoare who was black carded on the stroke of the last whistle and Darragh Keane for Asdee completed the scoring leav ing Castlegregory worthy winners and a place in the County Novice Championship Final against Scartaglen.
