Did you know the red and black flags might be flying high at the minute in the Shannonside Village but roll back the years to 1990 when they also had tremendous success in the club. So 1990 in Tarbert will be one of the many years they will always cherish as it was another successful year for the gaelic football in the parish both for juvenile and senior club.
The Under 14 team won the North Kerry League and Championship. The Under 12 and U16s were unlucky to loose out in two finals. Helena McElligott of Pulleen won an All Ireland Senior medal with the Kerry Ladies football team. Her brother J. J. won medals with Tarbert at every age level from juvenile to North Kerry Senior Championship in 1985. Their minor footballers won a seven-a-side tournament down in Sneem defeating some of the top teams in the County on their way to the final.
Team captain was Billy Costello, other members of the panel included;J. Histon, B. Kiely, J O Connell, M Carmody, D Lyndon, T J O Connor, B Conyard, G Buckley, S Leane. The minor team also won Division 2 of the North Kerry league. It was also a great year for the Seniors when the bridged a 5 year gap to win the North Kerry Championship, they topped Division 5 of the County league and Division 2 of the North Kerry League and reached the Junior County Final.
A little bit of history was made also in 1990 for the senior club when father and son lined out in the Division 2 final against Asdee, they were Patsy and his son John. Patsy “Skin” O Connell was a Kerry Junior selector while Stephen Carrig lined out with the Kerry Juniors and Brendan Kiely played with the Kerry Minors. To cap a memorable year, G A A stalwart Paddy Scanlon one of Tarberts favourites sons led the parade through the Village on New Years Eve.
