County League Division 5

St Senans 1-10 Asdee 0-10

Asdee traveled to Mountcoal on Sunday to face the bookies favourites for the Division 5 title, St Senans, who were favourites to make it two wins from two in this years league. However, the visitors were to put in an excellent display which almost gave them what would have been a deserved share of the spoils in a hard fought evenly contested game. Asdee were missing four of the team that drew against Ballydonoghue a week earlier due to injury and work comitments but have now assembled a strong panel and are much more equipped to deal with injuries than a few seasons ago.

Senans were first to score from a free on the 2nd minute and followed this up with further converted frees in the 13th and 15th minutes. Asdee responded with a brilliant point by Daragh Keane on the 16th minute after a great passage of play by the visitors.  Michael Breen got on the end of a move in the 19th minute to reduce the deficit to one point before Eoin Kennedy levelled with a free in the 21st minute. Senans Sean O’ Connell and Noel long traded points both in the 22nd minute to leave the game tied 0-04 to 0-04. The home side finished the half the stronger with a pointed free in the 27th minute before a great score on the stroke of half time. Senans led by 0-06 to 0-04 at half time and came out of the blocks much quicker in the second half.

A fine point in the 1st minute was followed by a goal after a great counter attacking movement in the 4th minute. Senas now had a six point cushion and looked in cruise control. However, for the 3rd week in a row John Kennedy’s men showed great heart to get back into a game that looked lost. A brace of Eoin Kennedy frees in the 6th and 7th minute started the figthback before Michael Breen pointed in the 11th minute. The same player got on the end of an Asdee move a minute later to leave the scoreline Senans 1-07 Asdee 0-08.

Eoin Kennedy responded to a Senas point in the 17th minute before a Michael Breen free in the 24th minute left just a point between the sides. This was to be as good as it got for Asdee though as Senans secured the victory with two late free in the 28th and 30th minute. Asdee had a chance to snatch it at the death but John Dorans 13 yard free was blocked on the line by a Senans defender.
