SPORTS GRANT. St. Marys,Asdee GAA Club wish to thank Mr Brendan Griffin TD, Minister of State at the Department of Transport, Tourism & Sport for his support in securing €33,000 in the Sports Capital Programme. This will help go towards the further development of Jack Walsh Memorial Park which will go towards the drainage system and new sand carpet for the pitch.
It is a big boost on the back of our recent fundraising efforts to further develop Jack Walsh Park. But however; unfortunately this amount will not cover or come near the cost of the development.
In order to get the job completed the club will be organising further fundraisers in the New Year in an effort to get the pitch sorted. At the minute the playing area has detiorated so much with usage only for about six months of the year preventing early rounds of the County League and squad training at the end of the year to go ahead. In fairness to our neighbouring clubs who have always helped in providing pitches when required.
Our very loyal band of players deserve better and the club wants to insure this goes ahead. Theres no doubt but that the Community spirit in Asdee and surroundings areas has proved invaluable down the years so once again we will be asking you for your continued support.
CHAMPIONSHIP. The Bernard O Callaghan Memorial Senior Football Championship; sponsored by McMunns Bar and Restaurant, Ballybunion began with 14 teams from the District competing and got underway on Sunday October 15th with Asdee taking on Knocknagoshel in a first round game at Frank Sheehy Park, Listowel and going on to meet Listowel Emmets in round 2 but failed in their attempt to reach the semi final which would be a first for the club.
Now just seven weeks later the most talked about and saught after District Final has reached its conclusion and which will be contested by Ballydonoghue and Ballyduff on this Sunday December 10th in what is sure to draw huge crowds to the Listowel venue. In fairness to the North Kerry Board they have done something maybe that should be done back the years by playing this prestigious competition before the Christmas Season and also the Board have the majority of 2017 fixtures completed.
So North Kerry Football Board; take a bow. There is always huge interest locally in the competition so once again they will flock in big numbers to the Capital of North Kerry to cheer on these two talented sides.
PHOTOGRAPHS. FINAL REMINDER. 2013 was an historic year for the St. Marys, Asdee G A A Club by winning a Munster “B” title defeating Charlville, County Cork in an epic final to become one of the few North Kerry Clubs to hold Munster medals. Team photographs are still available at a reasonable price; so anybody who may wish to have this historic picture can do so by contacting Club Secretary, Mark O Hanlon immediately. The offer stands until Saturday December 9th.
SHANNON RANGERS. A function to honour the Shannon Rangers Senior Football Team that won the 1977 County Senior Football Championship; was held in Kennellys Bar, Ballylongford on Friday night last. It was a memorable occasion with the majority of the players present. In fact this was the last time Shannon Rangers brought the Cup to Shannonside or even to appear in a County Final. Of course it was made all the sweeter by defeating our fellow District Board representatives Feale Rangers on a score of 0-10 to 0-6.
Both Paud and Eamon O Donoghue, Kilcolman, Asdee from the Western side of the parish played key roles in that victory that was backboned by ten players from Ballylongford; John McCarthy, Donie Mulvihill, Bryan McCarthy, Conor Heaphy, Michael McEllistrim, Jackie Walsh, (capt), Barry Walsh, Michael Keane, From Beale. Eoin Bomber Liston, Denis Ogie Moran, Padraig Liston, Joe Casey, Gearoid Griffin. Substitutes included; Tim McEllistrim, Barry O Connor, Mike Wren, Christy Donovan all Ballylongford. From Beale; Tony Griffin, Liam Brown, Mike Shannahan,
